Darleen Wilkerson Karpowicz Bio

Whether on canvas or on cloth, making art for Darleen is fun. Since childhood Darleen has been fascinated and enthralled by color and texture. She was drawn to bright colors, glitter and shiny cloth in those early years and still gets a lot of satisfaction from creating works which come from this child-like place within herself.
Darleen is known for her wonderful colorful acrylic mixed media paintings and her batiks – highlighting the Spanish architecture found in Southern California and throughout the Coachella Valley. Additionally, her love of flowers has always been a subject matter reproduced either in batik and or in acrylic painting. Darleen uses various mediums- wax, pastels, acrylics, dyes, inks and anything else she can add to make each piece unique and colorful and which expresses fun and happiness.
Her mixed media paintings reflect this long love affair with color, texture and images from her creative child spirit – yet – influenced by her three decades of experience of living and working in exotic cultures where color and pattern dominate all aspects of even everyday life.

She has been making batiks since she was in college and has used this medium in numerous ways and applied it to a variety of subject matter through the years. Batik is time consuming rewardingly yielding unique results. Darleen uses the traditional method of soaking waxed cloth in numerous dye baths as well as intergrading her own batik techniques on “art” paper and then applying the finished product to a gallery wrapped canvas.
She is now living and making art work in La Quinta, California. She exhibits and sells at the Art on Main shows in Old Town La Quinta at held between October- April each season. She also exhibits at the Desert Art Center in Palm Springs, has shown at the Southwestern Arts Festival in Indio, at the Borrego Springs Institute and is a regular participant at the La Quinta Artists Open Studio Tour hosted by La Quinta Historical Society and the La Quinta Museum. Last year Darleen was interviewed by Palm Springs Life online magazine which highlighted her work. See https://www.palmspringslife.com/la-quinta-artist-studio-tour/
